India has millions of skilled professionals — designers, developers, writers, marketers, accountants, and more. Yet most struggle to find clients, build a reputation, or earn money without a formal agency or platform taking a hefty cut. That's why we built the Grit&Gigs Skill Barter Marketplace.
What is Skill Barter?
Skill barter is exactly what it sounds like: you trade what you're good at for what someone else is good at. No money changes hands. Instead of paying ₹5,000 for a logo design, you offer your web development skills in exchange. Both parties get what they need without spending a rupee.
On Grit&Gigs, every user lists the skills they offer and the skills they need. Our matching engine connects complementary profiles — so a photographer needing a website can find a web developer needing headshots, and both walk away happy.
Why We Built It
Three observations drove us:
- Cash is scarce for early-stage professionals. Students, freelancers just starting out, and small business owners often have more skill than capital. Barter removes the financial barrier.
- Trust is built through community. When you trade with someone on the same platform, you build reputation. Each successful barter adds to your profile, making it easier to find future opportunities.
- India's informal economy already runs on barter. From village exchanges to small business networks, trading services for services is deeply ingrained. We're just digitising it and adding accountability.
How It Works
1. Create Your Profile
Sign up and list the skills you offer (e.g., graphic design, content writing, social media management) and the skills you're looking for. Be specific about your experience level and availability.
2. Browse or Get Matched
Browse the barter marketplace to see what others are offering, or let our system suggest matches based on your profile. Each listing shows what the user wants in return, so you know upfront whether it's a fair trade.
3. Propose a Trade
Send a barter proposal outlining the scope, timeline, and deliverables. Both parties agree on the terms before work begins.
4. Complete and Review
Deliver your work, get feedback, and leave a review. Every completed barter adds to your trust score, unlocking more visibility on the platform.
Real Examples
A graphic designer needs an e-commerce website. She offers five logo designs in exchange for a basic Shopify store setup. A web developer who needs branding for his startup takes the deal. Both save ₹15,000–20,000.
A freelance writer wants to learn video editing. He offers 10 blog posts (worth ₹10,000) in exchange for a video editing course or hands-on mentorship. A video editor needing content for his portfolio agrees. Both level up their skills.
What's Next
We're working on escrow-based barter — where both parties deposit a refundable hold (in Grit&Gigs credits) to ensure commitment. If one side doesn't deliver, the other is compensated. Launching later this year.
